Synopsis:
Elizabeth Cronin is having a truly terrible day. After losing her job, her car, and her husband to another woman all in a single afternoon, she is forced to move back into the stifling home of her overbearing, controlling mother. While struggling to reclaim her life, Elizabeth discovers a taped-up jack-in-the-box from her childhood.
Upon opening it, she unwittingly unleashes Drop Dead Fred—her long-lost, chaotic, and wildly inappropriate imaginary friend. While Fred was a source of joy (and trouble) for Elizabeth as a child, his reappearance in her adult life is a disaster. Invisible to everyone but Elizabeth, Fred sets out to “help” her find her spark again by wreaking absolute havoc on her professional and romantic prospects.
The film is a dark, whimsical exploration of repressed childhood trauma and the messy journey toward self-assertion, as Elizabeth must decide if Fred is a symptom of her breakdown or the key to her psychological freedom.
