Directed by Gus Trikonis, The Evil is a classic haunted house thriller that leans heavily into supernatural dread and atmospheric suspense. It is often noted for its effective use of practical effects and a claustrophobic setting.
Synopsis
The story centers on Dr. C.J. Arnold, a skeptical psychologist who purchases a dilapidated, sprawling mansion with a dark and mysterious history. His intention is to renovate the estate and turn it into a drug rehabilitation center. To help with the heavy lifting and initial setup, he enlists his wife, Caroline, and a group of his students.
The atmosphere shifts from productive to perilous when C.J. accidentally discovers a hidden trapdoor in the basement, bound by a heavy silver cross. Ignoring the symbolic warning, he removes the cross, unwittingly unleashing an ancient, malevolent force that has been imprisoned beneath the house for centuries.
The mansion quickly transforms into a death trap, sealing all exits and isolating the group. As the entity begins to pick them off one by one, the survivors must confront the reality of the supernatural and find a way to re-seal the evil before it consumes them all.

Notable Elements
-
The Setting: Much of the film’s tension is derived from the Gothic architecture of the mansion, which feels like a character in its own right.
-
The Conflict: The film plays with the trope of the man of science vs. the unexplainable, as C.J.’s skepticism is slowly eroded by the horrors he witnesses.
-
Visual Effects: Despite its modest budget, the film features creative lighting and physical stunts that contribute to a genuine sense of unease.
Fun Fact: The movie was filmed at the historic Las Cruces Adobe in California, a location that adds a layer of authentic, dusty isolation to the production.
