Directed by Roy Ward Baker, a veteran of Hammer Horror and A Night to Remember, The Monster Club is a quirky, tongue-in-cheek horror anthology. Produced by Amicus Productions co-founder Milton Subotsky, it serves as a late-entry tribute to the classic British portmanteau films of the 60s and 70s, blending campy humor with genuine supernatural chills.
The Plot Synopsis
The framing story begins on a dark London street when a starving vampire named Erasmus (Vincent Price) bites a fictionalized version of prolific horror author R. Chetwynd-Hayes (John Carradine). Grateful for the “donation” and realizing who his victim is, Erasmus invites the writer to an exclusive, secret underground hangout: The Monster Club.
As they sit among dancing ghouls and creatures, Erasmus explains the complex genealogy of the monster world, illustrating his points with three distinct macabre tales:
-
The Shadmock: A story of a lonely creature with a devastating, supernatural whistle who becomes the target of two greedy swindlers.
-
The Vampires: A darkly comedic tale involving a family of vampires, a persistent tax investigator, and a secret squad of vampire hunters.
-
The Humgoo: A more traditional, eerie story about a movie director scouting locations in a fog-shrouded village, only to discover the town is inhabited by “ghouls” who feed on the living.
Between the stories, the film features musical performances by 80s rock and pop acts, culminating in a satirical look at the “ultimate monster”—mankind itself.
