Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)

Directed by the visionary Ishirō Honda, with special effects by the “God of Visual Effects” Eiji Tsuburaya, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) is one of the most significant entries in the franchise. It marks Godzilla’s definitive transition from a destructive villain to an anti-heroic protector of Earth and introduces his greatest intergalactic rival.

The Premise

The film opens with a strange series of events: an unseasonable heatwave grips Japan, and a massive meteorite lands in the Kurobe Valley. Amidst this chaos, a princess from the small Himalayan country of Selgina narrowly escapes an assassination attempt on her plane. She resurfaces in Japan claiming to be from the planet Venus (Mars in the Western edit) and begins issuing dire prophetic warnings about the impending destruction of the Earth.

The Conflict

The princess’s predictions quickly prove terrifyingly accurate. Rodan emerges from a volcanic slumber at Mount Aso, and Godzilla rises from the sea to resume his rivalry with the winged titan. However, the prophetess warns that these two are the least of humanity’s worries.

The meteorite in the valley eventually shatters, birthing King Ghidorah, a golden, three-headed space dragon that had previously wiped out the civilization on Venus. As Ghidorah begins raining gravity beams down upon Japan’s cities, the world faces total annihilation.

The human protagonists—including a detective protecting the princess and the twin Shobijin—realize that neither the military nor a single monster can stop the space invader. They turn to Mothra (in her larval form) to act as a mediator. In one of the series’ most famous sequences, Mothra must attempt to convince the bickering Godzilla and Rodan to set aside their hatred for humanity and join forces to save the planet.

Why It’s a Masterpiece

  • The Birth of the “Avengers” Formula: This was the first “team-up” movie in the series, establishing the trope of Earth’s monsters uniting against a common alien threat.

  • Akiko Wakabayashi: Two years before she would become a “Bond Girl” in You Only Live Twice, Wakabayashi gave a haunting, ethereal performance as the possessed princess.

  • King Ghidorah’s Debut: The three-headed dragon remains arguably the most impressive puppet ever created by Tsuburaya’s team, requiring a small army of wire-operators to control the independent movements of its necks, wings, and tails.
