Directed by Leslie H. Martinson, this big-screen spin-off of the wildly popular ABC television series is the ultimate celebration of 1960s “Camp.” It takes the “POW!” and “ZAP!” aesthetic of the show and scales it up with a bigger budget, more gadgets, and a quadruple-threat of iconic villains.
The Plot Synopsis
The Dynamic Duo, Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward), face their greatest challenge yet when the “United Underworld”—a diabolical alliance consisting of The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler, and Catwoman—joins forces.
The colorful criminals have hijacked a revolutionary invention: a dehydrator ray capable of turning any living human into a small pile of colorful dust. Their target? The nine members of the United World Security Council. By dehydrating the world’s leaders, the villains plan to hold the planet hostage and take over the globe.
From the deck of a pre-atomic submarine to the seats of the iconic Batmobile, Batman and Robin must use every tool in their utility belts to decode the Riddler’s puns and survive the Penguin’s exploding sharks. Along the way, the “Caped Crusader” finds himself distracted by a mysterious Soviet journalist named Miss Kitka, unaware that she is a high-profile member of the very criminal cabal he is trying to stop. It is a race against time filled with narrow escapes, shark repellent, and the struggle of trying to get rid of a very large bomb in a crowded dock area.

The “Bat-Style”
-
Self-Aware Humor: Unlike the brooding, dark versions of Batman seen in later decades, this version is intentionally hilarious. Adam West plays the character with a “deadpan” earnestness that makes his lectures on pedestrian safety and proper grammar all the funnier.
-
Colorful Villains: This is the only time the “Big Four” villains appear together in a live-action film. Notably, Cesar Romero famously refused to shave his mustache for the role of The Joker, simply applying the white face paint right over it.
-
The Gadgets: The film introduced the Bat-Copter and the Bat-Boat, expanding the duo’s arsenal beyond what the television budget could typically allow.
