Ornamental Hairpin (1941)

Directed by the master of Japanese lyrical realism, Hiroshi Shimizu, Ornamental Hairpin (1941) is a poignant, understated masterpiece that captures the quiet rhythms of life at a mountain retreat.

Synopsis

While staying at a serene hot spring resort, a soldier named Nanmura accidentally steps on a lost kanzashi (an ornamental hairpin) at the bottom of a communal bath. The resulting injury to his foot forces him to extend his stay at the inn.

When the owner of the hairpin—a graceful woman named Emi—is identified, she travels from Tokyo to the remote spa to personally apologize for the mishap. Her arrival sparks a subtle, tender connection between the two. Surrounded by a colorful cast of eccentric fellow guests, including a grumpy professor and a pair of lively children, Emi and Nanmura develop a bond defined by unspoken feelings. However, the external pressures of a world in flux and their own personal duties cast a shadow over their brief, idyllic encounter.
