Deep Red (1975)

Directed by the “Master of the Macabre” Dario Argento, Deep Red (originally titled Profondo Rosso) is widely considered the pinnacle of the Italian Giallo genre. It is a stylish, hyper-violent thriller that blends intricate mystery with surreal, dreamlike visuals and a pulse-pounding progressive rock score.

Synopsis

The story follows Marcus Daly, an English jazz pianist living in Rome, who happens to witness the brutal murder of a renowned psychic through the window of his apartment. The psychic, during a public lecture earlier that evening, had sensed the presence of a “perverted mind” in the audience—someone with a history of killing.

Driven by the nagging feeling that he missed a vital clue at the crime scene, Marcus teams up with a tenacious and witty journalist, Gianna Brezzi, to track down the killer. Their investigation leads them through crumbling villas, dark urban corridors, and forgotten local folklore. As Marcus peels back the layers of the mystery, he realizes that the murderer is now hunting him, and the key to the killer’s identity lies in a distorted childhood memory hidden behind a wall of blood-red secrets.
