Godzilla 2000 (1999)

Directed by Takao Okawara, Godzilla 2000 (1999) was Toho’s immediate response to the 1998 American film. It served as a fresh reboot, ignoring all previous continuities except for the 1954 original, and kicked off the “Millennium” era with a sharper, more aggressive look for the King of the Monsters.

The Premise

The film introduces the Godzilla Prediction Network (GPN), an underfunded independent group led by Yuji Shinoda, who believes that Godzilla should be studied rather than destroyed. While tracking Godzilla’s movements along the coast, a government agency called Crisis Control Intelligence (CCI) discovers a massive, 6,000-year-old rock formation at the bottom of the ocean. When the CCI attempts to lift the object using balloons, it unexpectedly floats to the surface on its own power—revealing itself to be a dormant extraterrestrial spacecraft.

The Conflict

The UFO soon becomes active, seeking out “Organizer G1” (the regenerative secret within Godzilla’s DNA) to restore its own long-lost physical form. As the alien craft scans Godzilla and the city’s computer networks, it begins to drain the world’s data and biological information.

The conflict escalates into a three-way struggle for dominance:

  • The GPN: Shinoda and his daughter struggle to protect their research and survive the crossfire as they realize the aliens intend to rewrite Earth’s atmosphere.

  • The CCI: Led by the ruthless Mitsuo Katagiri, the government agency prepares to use “Full Metal Missiles” to destroy Godzilla once and for all, regardless of the alien threat.

  • The Extra-Terrestrial: The UFO eventually manifests into a terrifying new biological entity known as Orga, a mutated beast that attempts to consume Godzilla’s essence to become a perfect clone.

The finale takes place amidst the skyscrapers of Shinjuku, where Godzilla must prove that Earth’s apex predator cannot be so easily replaced or replicated.

Why It’s a Fan Favorite

  • The New Look: This film introduced the “MireGoji” suit, featuring a more reptilian face, a massive mouth full of jagged teeth, and giant, purple, flame-shaped dorsal fins.

  • The “Organizer G1”: This entry provided a scientific name for Godzilla’s legendary healing factor, explaining how he survives wounds that would kill any other creature.

  • The American Edit: The US theatrical release was famously re-edited with a more punchy sound design, a slightly altered score, and a “campier” English dub that many fans actually prefer for its high energy and humour.
