The Entity (1982)

The Entity (1982) is a harrowing and controversial supernatural thriller that stands out for its clinical, semi-documentary approach to a ghost story. Unlike the more whimsical hauntings of its era, this film is grounded in psychological realism and claims to be based on the true case of Doris Bither.

The Plot

Carla Moran is a hardworking single mother living in Los Angeles who is suddenly and violently assaulted in her home by an invisible, malevolent force. When the attacks become more frequent and increasingly brutal, Carla seeks help from both a psychiatrist, Dr. Sneiderman, and a team of parapsychologists from UCLA.

The film follows the escalating conflict between two schools of thought: Dr. Sneiderman believes Carla is suffering from a deep-seated psychological delusion manifesting as “hysterical” physical trauma, while the paranormal researchers become convinced that she is being targeted by a powerful, non-human energy. As the attacks begin to happen in front of witnesses and defy scientific explanation, the researchers decide to set a massive, high-tech trap to capture the phantom force. Carla is forced to endure a terrifying experiment to reclaim her life and protect her children from an enemy that cannot be seen or touched.

Vibe & Style

The film is noted for its aggressive, jarring soundtrack (featuring heavy, distorted guitar riffs) and its unflinching portrayal of trauma. Barbara Hershey delivered a powerful, physically demanding performance that received significant critical acclaim, helping to elevate the film above standard exploitation fare. It remains one of the most unsettling “haunting” films ever made due to its focus on the violation of a domestic space.

Fun Fact: Director Martin Scorsese has frequently cited The Entity as one of the scariest horror films of all time.
