The Night of the Generals (1967)

Directed by Anatole Litvak, The Night of the Generals (1967) is a unique fusion of a whodunit murder mystery and a sprawling World War II political thriller. Produced by Sam Spiegel, the film explores the dark irony of searching for a single killer in the midst of a global slaughter.

The Plot

In 1942, during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, a Polish prostitute is brutally murdered. An eyewitness reports seeing a German general leaving the scene. Major Grau, a principled and relentless intelligence officer from the Abwehr, is assigned to the case. His investigation narrows down to three high-ranking suspects: the flamboyant and hedonistic General Kahlenberge, the careerist General von Seydlitz-Gabler, and the cold, legendary hero of the Russian front, General Tanz.

However, Grau’s pursuit of justice is interrupted by the tides of war. The story jumps forward to July 1944 in occupied Paris, where the paths of the three generals and the detective cross again. As a secret plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler (the real-life July 20 plot) simmers in the background, another murder occurs, matching the pattern of the Warsaw killing. Grau must navigate the treacherous political landscape of a dying regime to catch a predator who hides behind a uniform of absolute authority.

  • Complex Morality: It asks a provocative question: Is the crime of one man more important than the organized crimes of an entire army?

  • Historical Backdrop: The film masterfully weaves the fictional murder investigation into actual historical events, including the chaotic internal purge that followed the failed attempt on Hitler’s life.
