3 Idiots (2009)

3 Idiots is a genre-defining coming-of-age comedy-drama that became a global phenomenon. It serves as both a heartwarming story of friendship and a sharp, satirical indictment of the immense pressures within the Indian education system.

The Premise

The narrative unfolds across two timelines. In the present day, two longtime friends, Farhan and Raju, embark on a cross-country road trip to find their lost companion, Rancho, who vanished without a trace on their graduation day ten years prior.

Through frequent flashbacks to their time at the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), the film explores their bond. While Farhan wants to be a wildlife photographer and Raju struggles with the weight of his family’s poverty, Rancho is a free-thinking genius who challenges the school’s rigid, “machine-like” teaching methods. His rebellious philosophy pits the trio against the formidable and hyper-competitive director of the institute, Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe (nicknamed “Virus”).

The film balances slapstick humour with emotional depth, exploring the idea that one should “chase excellence, and success will follow.”

The film was directed by Rajkumar Hirani and is loosely based on the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat.
