Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)

Directed by Jun Fukuda, Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) is a colorful, action-packed entry that famously features Godzilla and his ally Anguirus “talking” to each other through comic-book-style speech bubbles and sound effects.

The Premise

The story follows Gengo Kotaka, a struggling manga artist who lands a job at “World Children’s Land,” a massive new amusement park whose centerpiece is a life-sized tower shaped like Godzilla. While the park’s owners claim their mission is “Absolute Peace,” Gengo becomes suspicious when he discovers a hidden agenda involving strange tapes and garbled messages that seem to be communicating with monsters across the galaxy.

The Conflict

Gengo joins forces with a group of hippie activists and a girl searching for her kidnapped brother. Together, they uncover the truth: the park is a front for a race of cockroach-like aliens from the “M Space Hunter Nebula.” Their plan is to use the Godzilla Tower to control two space monsters—the three-headed King Ghidorah and a lethal new cyborg named Gigan—to raze Earth’s cities.

Sensing the extraterrestrial frequency, Godzilla and the spike-backed Anguirus depart Monster Island to intercept the threat. The result is a brutal, tag-team wrestling-style battle that pits Earth’s defenders against a space-borne invasion.

Why It Stands Out

  • Gigan’s Debut: This film introduced one of Godzilla’s most iconic and bizarre rivals. Gigan is a cyborg monster with a visor for an eye, hooked blades for hands, and a working buzzsaw in its chest.

  • The “Tag Team” Era: The film marks the peak of the Showa-era “heroic” Godzilla, moving away from the grim metaphors of the 50s and into the high-energy, campy fun of the 70s.

  • Nakajima’s Last Stand: This was the final time Haruo Nakajima, the original suit actor who played Godzilla since 1954, portrayed the character before retiring.
