Destroy All Monsters (1968)

Directed by Ishirō Honda, with the final major contribution from special effects mastermind Eiji Tsuburaya, Destroy All Monsters (1968) was originally intended to be the grand finale of the Godzilla franchise. Set in the “future” of 1999, it is the ultimate kaiju extravaganza, featuring an unprecedented roster of eleven different monsters.

The Premise

By the end of the 20th century, humanity has finally achieved world peace and successfully confined all of Earth’s giant monsters to Monsterland (a secured facility on Ogasawara Island). This scientific utopia is shattered when a mysterious alien race known as the Kilaaks invades, using mind-control technology to seize command of the monsters. Under alien influence, the creatures are dispatched to systematically level the world’s major capitals: Godzilla attacks New York, Rodan strikes Moscow, Mothra invades Beijing, and Gorosaurus destroys Paris.

The Conflict

As the world’s military forces fall before the coordinated monster assault, the crew of the advanced moon-ship Moonlight SY-3, led by Captain Katsuo Yamabe, embarks on a desperate mission to locate the Kilaaks’ hidden base and break their telepathic hold over the monsters.

The narrative shifts from global disaster to a cosmic counter-offensive:

  • The Human Resistance: Scientists work frantically to develop a device that can override the Kilaak signal, while the SY-3 engages in high-stakes dogfights with alien saucers.

  • The Monster Rally: Once freed from alien control, Earth’s monsters—including Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus, and Minilla—converge at the foot of Mount Fuji for a final stand.

  • The Final Boss: Realizing their defeat is imminent, the Kilaaks summon their ultimate weapon from deep space: the three-headed terror, King Ghidorah, to engage in a brutal, lopsided battle against the combined might of Earth’s defenders.
