House of 1,000 Dolls (1967)

House of 1,000 Dolls (1967)—also known as La casa de las mil muñecas—is a colorful, sleazy Euro-thriller that blends elements of the “white slavery” exploitation subgenre with the stylish mystery of a 1960s spy caper.

The Plot

The story is set in the exotic, winding streets of Tangier. Stephen Armstrong, a vacationing American, crosses paths with an old friend who is desperately searching for his missing girlfriend. Stephen soon discovers that his friend’s disappearance is linked to a sophisticated international kidnapping ring that operates under a very public facade.

The masterminds behind the scheme are Felix Manderville, a charismatic stage magician, and his beautiful partner, Rebecca. During their popular nightclub act, they use hypnosis and illusions to make young women “vanish”—literally spiriting them away to a luxurious, high-security brothel known as the “House of 1,000 Dolls.” After his friend is murdered for getting too close to the truth, Stephen takes it upon himself to infiltrate the city’s seedy underworld, navigate a web of double-crosses, and locate the fortress-like villa before his own wife becomes the next victim.

Production Note

The film is a notable entry in the filmography of legendary horror icon Vincent Price, though it leans more into crime and suspense than his usual gothic fare. It was produced by the prolific Harry Alan Towers and features the lush, vibrant cinematography typical of European co-productions of the late 60s. Interestingly, Price later claimed in interviews that the production was a bit chaotic, even alleging that the producers filmed “adult” versions of some scenes without his knowledge after he had left the set!
