Morocco (1930)

Set against the sweltering, dusty backdrop of North Africa, Morocco is a landmark pre-Code romance famous for its smoldering atmosphere and for introducing American audiences to the incomparable Marlene Dietrich.

The Premise

The story follows Mademoiselle Amy Jolly, a weary cabaret singer who arrives in Mogador to start a new life and leave a troubled past behind. During her provocative debut performance at a local nightclub, she catches the eye of two very different men: Tom Brown, a cynical, devil-may-care private in the French Foreign Legion, and Kennington La Bessière, a wealthy, sophisticated painter.

While La Bessière offers Amy a life of security, luxury, and high-society respect, she finds herself helplessly drawn to the rugged and dangerous Private Brown. As the Foreign Legion prepares to march out into the treacherous desert for a perilous mission, Amy is forced to choose between the safety of wealth and the unpredictable, agonising devotion of a man who lives every day as if it were his last.
