The Premise
The story follows Commander “Rich” Richardson, a veteran submariner who has spent a year behind a desk after his previous boat was sunk by a legendary Japanese destroyer in the “Bungo Straits.” Obsessed with revenge, Richardson finally secures command of the USS Nerka by convincing the Navy he is ready for combat.
However, his arrival is met with resentment. The crew—and specifically the popular Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe—feels slighted, as Bledsoe was expected to take command himself. As the Nerka heads into enemy waters, Richardson pushes the crew through relentless, unorthodox drills, keeping his true intentions hidden.
