Run Silent, Run Deep (1958)

Widely regarded as one of the most authentic submarine thrillers ever made, Run Silent, Run Deep is a masterclass in tension, psychological warfare, and the grueling reality of life under the waves during World War II.

The Premise

The story follows Commander “Rich” Richardson, a veteran submariner who has spent a year behind a desk after his previous boat was sunk by a legendary Japanese destroyer in the “Bungo Straits.” Obsessed with revenge, Richardson finally secures command of the USS Nerka by convincing the Navy he is ready for combat.

However, his arrival is met with resentment. The crew—and specifically the popular Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe—feels slighted, as Bledsoe was expected to take command himself. As the Nerka heads into enemy waters, Richardson pushes the crew through relentless, unorthodox drills, keeping his true intentions hidden. The atmosphere inside the cramped vessel becomes a powder keg of mutiny and suspicion as Bledsoe realizes that his commander isn’t just following orders—he is hunting a personal ghost, even if it means putting the entire crew in the crosshairs of the deadliest destroyer in the Pacific.

Behind the Periscope

The film is notable for its incredible realism, aided by the fact that the author of the original novel was a highly decorated submarine commander.
