All About Eve is a razor-sharp, sophisticated masterpiece of the “backstage” genre. Released in 1950, it is celebrated for its biting wit and its cynical, albeit brilliant, exploration of ambition, aging, and the ruthless nature of show business.
The Synopsis
The story revolves around Margo Channing, one of Broadway’s most revered but aging stars. Enter Eve Harrington, a seemingly timid and star-struck young woman who lingers outside the theater every night just to catch a glimpse of her idol. Moved by Eve’s story of hardship and devotion, Margo takes her under her wing, hiring her as a personal assistant.
However, as Eve becomes an indispensable part of Margo’s life, it becomes clear that her modest exterior hides a cold, calculating ambition. With quiet precision, Eve begins to move in on Margo’s roles, her friends, and her professional life. The film follows Eve’s calculated ascent through the theatrical ranks, observed and narrated by the acerbic, high-society theater critic Addison DeWitt, who recognizes a kindred predatory spirit when he sees one. It is a high-stakes game of manipulation where the curtains are always open, and the performances never truly stop.
