Shanghai Express (1932)

Directed by the legendary Josef von Sternberg, Shanghai Express (1932) is a visual masterpiece of Pre-Code cinema, renowned for its atmospheric lighting and opulent set design.

The Premise

Set against the backdrop of the Chinese Civil War, the story unfolds aboard a luxury train traveling from Peking to Shanghai. The journey is fraught with tension as the passengers realize they are sharing the cramped quarters with a diverse and suspicious group of travelers, all while the threat of rebel forces looms over the tracks.

The Players

  • Marlene Dietrich stars as Shanghai Lily, a notorious courtesan whose presence on the train sparks immediate scandal and whispers among the “respectable” passengers.

  • Clive Brook plays Captain Donald “Doc” Harvey, a British military officer and Lily’s former lover, who is stunned to encounter her after years of estrangement.

  • Anna May Wong delivers a powerful performance as Hui Fei, a fellow passenger whose quiet dignity hides a steely resolve.

  • Warner Oland portrays Henry Chang, a mysterious businessman whose true motives remain a central point of intrigue.

The Conflict

As the train steams through the war-torn countryside, the rekindled embers between Lily and Harvey are tested by social judgment and personal pride. However, the emotional drama is soon eclipsed by physical danger when the train is halted by an armed militia. In the high-stakes standoff that follows, the passengers’ true characters are stripped bare, and Shanghai Lily must decide exactly how much she is willing to sacrifice to save the man she still loves.

Note: The film is celebrated for Lee Garmes’ Academy Award-winning cinematography, which used intricate layers of gauze and smoke to create a dreamlike, exotic atmosphere that remains iconic nearly a century later.
