The final, breathtaking chapter of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005)—often shortened to Lady Vengeance—is a stylised, operatic masterpiece that shifts the series’ focus toward themes of redemption, motherhood, and the aesthetics of retribution.
The Premise
The film follows Lee Geum-ja, a woman who became a national sensation and a media fixture after being wrongfully imprisoned for thirteen years for the kidnapping and murder of a young boy. During her time in prison, she earns the nickname “Kind-hearted Geum-ja” for her seemingly saintly devotion to helping her fellow inmates.
However, beneath her angelic exterior lies a cold, calculated obsession. Upon her release, Geum-ja sheds her “kind” persona to track down the man truly responsible for the crime: Mr. Baek. With the help of the former inmates she befriended behind bars, she orchestrates an elaborate plan to exact a revenge that is as meticulous as it is beautiful. As she moves closer to her target, Geum-ja must also navigate the painful process of reuniting with the daughter she was forced to give up.

Themes & Style
While the previous films in the trilogy felt gritty and grounded, Lady Vengeance is known for its baroque visual flair and dark humour.
-
The Visuals: The film is famous for its use of vibrant colours—specifically the iconic red eye shadow worn by Geum-ja—contrasted against a fading world. (There is even a “Fade-to-Black-and-White” version of the film that bleeds colour out as it progresses).
-
Atonement vs. Revenge: Unlike its predecessors, this film asks if revenge can ever truly lead to spiritual cleansing or if it simply leaves the soul further stained.
-
Collective Justice: The story eventually evolves from a personal vendetta into a harrowing communal experience that questions the nature of morality.
“Be careful… even the kindest heart can be driven to do the unthinkable.”
