The Sensuous Nurse (1975)

Original title: L’infermiera

Directed by Nello Rossati, The Sensuous Nurse is a quintessential example of the commedia sexy all’italiana (Italian sexy comedy) genre. While the film is lighthearted and provocative, it is also a satirical look at greed, inheritance, and the chaotic dynamics of an aristocratic family in decline.

The Synopsis

The story centres on a wealthy, ageing widower named Leonida Bottacin, who suffers from a precarious heart condition. His greedy heirs—a collection of eccentric and conniving relatives—are anxious to secure their inheritance. Fearing that Leonida might outlive their patience or change his will, they hatch a cynical plan to “speed up” his demise.

They hire Anna, a stunningly beautiful and alluring nurse, ostensibly to care for the old man. However, the family’s true motive is far more devious: they hope that Anna’s constant, provocative presence will provide a shock to Leonida’s weak heart, leading to a “natural” but timely exit. The plan backfires in comedic fashion as Anna proves to be more than just a distraction. As Leonida finds a renewed lease on life through her companionship, the family’s schemes descend into a series of farcical misunderstandings, betrayals, and unexpected romantic entanglements.

Production Notes

  • The Star Power of Ursula Andress: The film is primarily remembered for starring Ursula Andress, the original “Bond Girl” from Dr. No. Her casting brought a level of international glamour and prestige to the production that was uncommon for the genre.

  • A “Bond” Reunion: Interestingly, the film features two other actors with ties to the James Bond franchise: Luciana Paluzzi (the villainous Fiona Volpe in Thunderball) and Jack Palance (who appeared in several iconic action and Western roles).

  • Social Satire: Beneath its playful exterior, the film critiques the “Vulture Culture” of the Italian upper class, portraying the family members as far more morally bankrupt than the “scandalous” nurse they hire.

  • Genre Success: The Sensuous Nurse was a significant commercial success in Italy and Europe, helping to define the mid-70s aesthetic of the erotic comedy through its high production values and lush Italian villa setting.
