The Street Fighter (1974)

Directed by Shigehiro Ozawa, The Street Fighter (1974) is a landmark of martial arts cinema, famous for its uncompromising brutality and for launching Sonny Chiba into international superstardom.

The Plot

The story centers on Terry Tsurugi, an amoral, ruthless, and highly skilled mercenary karate master. Unlike the noble heroes typical of the genre, Tsurugi is a man driven purely by profit and his own code of survival.

When he is hired by the Yakuza to kidnap the daughter of a recently deceased oil tycoon, Tsurugi demands an exorbitant fee. When the gangsters refuse and attempt to kill him instead, he switches sides—not out of the goodness of his heart, but out of spite and a better business opportunity. He becomes the girl’s lethal protector, systematically tearing through waves of assassins and martial arts experts sent to eliminate them.

Key Information

  • Director: Shigehiro Ozawa

  • Lead Actor: Sonny Chiba (as Terry Tsurugi)

  • Supporting Cast: Goichi Yamada, Yutaka Nakajima, and Masafumi Suzuki.

Why It’s a Cult Classic

  • The Anti-Hero: Tsurugi is one of the most vicious protagonists in film history, utilizing a “bone-crushing” style of karate that prioritizes efficiency over grace.

  • Historical Impact: This was the first film to ever receive an X rating in the United States solely for its graphic violence (rather than sexual content).

  • Stylistic Flairs: The movie is famous for its “X-ray vision” shots, which show the internal damage caused by Tsurugi’s strikes, a technique later popularized by the Mortal Kombat video games.

Fun Fact: Sonny Chiba’s performance was so influential that it famously became a point of obsession for characters in Quentin Tarantino’s films, particularly in True Romance.
