The Evil Dead (1981)

Directed by Sam Raimi in his feature film debut, The Evil Dead (1981) is a seminal masterpiece of independent horror that redefined the “cabin in the woods” sub-genre with its relentless energy and inventive camera work.

The Plot

The story follows five Michigan State University students—Ash Williams, his girlfriend Linda, his sister Cheryl, and their friends Scott and Shelly—who travel to a remote, dilapidated cabin in the Tennessee mountains for a weekend getaway.

While exploring the cellar, they discover a mysterious book, the Naturon Demonto (later known as the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis), and a tape recorder. Upon playing the tape, they unknowingly chant ancient incantations that awaken an entropic, demonic force residing in the surrounding woods. This “Deadite” presence begins to possess the campers one by one, turning them into grotesque, taunting monsters. Isolated and besieged, the survivors must fight to stay alive until dawn in a nightmarish battle of survival.
