Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? (1971)

Directed by Curtis Harrington, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? (1971) is a macabre, modern-day reimagining of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale, blending psychological suspense with Gothic horror.

Synopsis

In 1920s England, Mrs. Forrest—affectionately known as “Auntie Roo”—is a wealthy American widow famous for hosting lavish Christmas parties for the orphans of the local manor. To the townspeople, she is a grand eccentric; however, behind the doors of her decaying mansion, she is a woman consumed by grief, obsessively keeping the mummified remains of her late daughter in a nursery.

When two orphaned siblings, Christopher and Katy, sneak into her annual festivities, Roo becomes fixated on Katy, believing the girl is the reincarnation of her lost child. She lures the children into staying, showering them with affection and sweets. However, the clever and increasingly paranoid Christopher begins to suspect that Auntie Roo’s motherly love masks a much more sinister intent. A deadly game of wits ensues as the children attempt to escape a “fairy tale” that has taken a dark and distorted turn.
