Oliver! (1968)

Directed by Carol Reed, Oliver! (1968) is the lavish, Academy Award-winning musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist. Bringing a vibrant energy to Victorian London, the film remains one of the most beloved entries in the history of movie musicals.

The Plot

The story follows Oliver, a lonely orphan who dares to ask for more food at a bleak workhouse, sparking a series of events that leads to him being sold to an undertaker. After escaping a life of misery, Oliver runs away to London, where he is befriended by a charismatic street urchin known as the Artful Dodger.

Dodger introduces Oliver to a colorful underworld led by Fagin, an aging but clever criminal who trains homeless boys to be expert pickpockets. While Oliver initially finds a sense of belonging among this “family”—including the kind-hearted Nancy and her volatile partner, the menacing Bill Sikes—a botched robbery brings him into the path of a wealthy gentleman who may hold the key to his true past. Oliver soon finds himself caught in a dangerous tug-of-war between the safety of a respectable life and the shadows of the criminal world he left behind.
